Purchasing, preparation, and service practices must be in place to ensure foods purchased, prepared, and served are from inspected food manufacturers and distributers and support a healthy school meals environment.

Breakfast

School Breakfast Program

GRAINS AND/OR MEAT/MEAT ALTERNATES

Schools work ensure 80% or more of the grains served are whole grain and whole grain-rich supporting sustained energy and better focus in class.

FRUITS AND/OR VEGETABLES

Schools serve a variety of fresh, canned or pre-sealed fruit cups (must be packed in juice, water, or light syrup only), or dried fruits, but no more than 50% of the fruit offerings can come from juice to prioritize whole fruits for fiber and nutrients.

MILK

Students have a choice of low-fat or fat-free milk at every meal. Whole milk or flavored whole milk is not allowed.

VEGETABLES

Students enjoy a colorful variety of vegetables each week, including dark green, red/orange, beans/peas, starchy, and others to meet nutrition goals. Potato chips or fried chips do not count as a vegetable.

FRUITS

Whole fruits, fruit cups (must be packed in juice, water, or light syrup only) or 100% fruit juice (meaning no added sugars) are served daily, ensuring students get essential vitamins and fiber.

GRAINS

Lunch includes whole grain-rich options like brown rice, whole-wheat bread, or pasta to provide lasting energy. Grain-based desserts (e.g., cookies, brownies, or cake) are limited to minimize added sugar and fat.

MEAT/MEAT ALTERNATES

Nutritious proteins like lean meats, beans, eggs, and cheese are served to fuel learning and growth.
